This is a rather unfortunate affair,

and it is a little difficult to comment without

more information about the allegations which have

been made by Mrs. Selwyn Clarke. I certainly

think that there is no case for moving Dr.

Selwyn Clarke from Hong Kong (in any case his

transfer to another post would, I think, be

difficult), embarrassing though the indiscretions

of his wife may have been.

I suggest that we should merely send

of our refly

a copy of the letter, with enclosures, to Sir G.

Northcote by personal and private letter, and

reply to the F.0. that we have done this, and

that we do not propose at the moment to take

any further action.
